As early as 1904, Margarete's nephew Franz looked for a way of protecting Steiff Classic products against imitations. His inspired idea will later become a symbol of quality and craftsmanship: a metal button in the ear as a trademark. Initially featuring an elephant motif, the metal button soon bears the brand name and is inextricably associated with the brand.
